Ideal 3
El Paso
is located at the southern end of the Rockies. This area has unique
geological features as well as unique geological history. This aspect would
give unique insight to participants living in the area. This proposal will be
collaboration with staff and/or faculty with the UTEP geology department. The
participants will be taken or meet at a pre-designated location such as trans
Mountain or scenic drive. A presentation will be presented in forming the
participants of the unique geographical features and the geological history
behind the formation of the El Paso area. Pre- and post-surveys will be given
to participants.
ideal 2
El Paso
is located in a high desert and although fed by the Rio Grande does not have an
abundance of surface water. A large percentage of the water comes from wells on
both sides of the border. With the combined population of the two sister cities
and major burden has been put on the local aquifer. Deep underground there's a
tremendous amount of water but it is non-palatable, brackish. El Paso is home
of the largest inland desalinization plant in the world. This plant is a
state-of-the-art desalinization plant. This information would not only help
participants understand the importance of conservation but also give insight
into the plant workings and increasing local pride. In collaboration with
representatives from the Kay Bailey Hutchinson water desalinization plant will
take a tour of the plant as well as a presentation on the local water table,
conservation as well as the science involved in the desalinization process.
Participants will complete a pre-and post-survey.
Ideal 1
The El
Paso area is part-time home to the largest variation of hummingbirds in the
world. Of houses located near the center of the small circle that holds an
overlap between North American and South American hummingbirds’ migration
routes. By introducing local participants to this information as well as
educating them on how to attract hummingbirds through feeders would bring
enrichment appreciation of this location. In collaboration with the El Paso zoo
and or staff/ faculty from UTEP's biology department a presentation will be
developed to inform participants of the tremendous diversity of hummingbirds in
this area as well is how to create a hummingbird feeder. Part of the
presentation will also inform participants about plants indigenous to this area
that attract hummingbirds. The presentation would be presented either at the El
Paso zoo or a desert garden location.
